Abstract

RODRIGUEZ DEL TORO, Vivian. Ataduras en las dos costillas: Reflexiones e investigaciones sobre los asuntos, problemas y retos de las mujeres. Rev. Puertorriq. Psicol. [online]. 2012, vol.23, pp. 9-30. ISSN 1946-2026.

This article presents a global view of women’s issues in terms of human rights, equality and justice between genders. Women’s lives and challenges in Puerto Rico are discussed from various perspectives: educational, work related, family, social. Gender gaps between women’s educational levels, workforce participation, unequal pay and scarcity of women in politics and leadership positions are addressed. Women’s double shift between family and work responsibilities is discussed within social and gender role changes. Public policy, employers, family and society need to address these challenges in women’s lives. Demographic changes and increasing diversity in family structures are associated to poverty and need for empowerment. Violence against women and gender homicides are serious social problems that require prevention strategies from a gender perspective approach.

Keywords : Women issues; gender equality; violence; prevention.
