Abstract

CRESPO FERNANDEZ, Leila  and  L. RIVERA GARCIA, Migna. El poder de la resiliencia generado por el cáncer de mama en mujeres en Puerto Rico. Rev. Puertorriq. Psicol. [online]. 2012, vol.23, pp. 109-126. ISSN 1946-2026.

Breast cancer has unbridled cell growth, and is related to external and internal factors. It has been identified as the main cause of death by cancer in Puerto Rican women. Resilience fosters an attitude that allows dealing with adverse situations by developing intellectual, intrapsychic, and interpersonal factors that strengthen their view of life. The purpose of this qualitative research was to explore the mindbody relationship, during and after the conclusion of treatment for breast cancer. Results reveal how the meaning towards the disease is developed. The participating women battled for survival by developing cognitive and emotional strengths during the recovering phase of the treatment, thus finding purpose in life, positive aspects and perceiving the disease as an opportunity for personal growth and development.

Keywords : Breast cancer; emotions; self efficacy; resilience.
