Abstract

HERNANDEZ, Eduardo A. Lugo. Acción y transformación para la prevención de la violencia escolar a través de la Investigación Participativa de Base Comunitaria con niños y niñas. Rev. Puertorriq. Psicol. [online]. 2013, vol.24, pp. 01-16. ISSN 1946-2026.

School violence is a public health problem. It impacts children's academic achievement, their socio-emotional development and the quality of life of every member of the school community. Interventions have been developed, but usually these interventions stem from adults trying to modify children's behavior without their participation. Community Based Participatory Research provides the platform to involve children in the research process and enhance their participation in decision-making processes in schools. In this article I describe the methodological design of a CBPR study that will analyze the causes, characteristics, effects and possible solutions for school violence prevention from the children's perspective. This design includes the training of fifth and sixth grade children as interviewers, so that they can participate in interviewing members of the school community. Results from studies as the one described in this article could generate recommendations to reduce school violence while children are trained in the research process and its role in social action.
