Talented athletes and the role played by their familiesThe present study aimed at investigating high performance athletes’ perception related to the frequency in which their parents used to implement parental practices associated with talent development in sports. A total of 225 adult athletes participated in the study, distributed among twenty sports modalities. The information obtained by both Factor Inventory of Parental Practices Related to Talent Development in Sports (IFATE) and a questionnaire containing demographic data, in addition to information regarding the athletes’ sports practice allowed to compare responses to the five factors of the Inventory, in relation to the athletes’ gender, type of sport practiced, social class of families of origin, time of participation in competitions, and level of competitions in which athletes participated. The results indicated significant differences due to the type of sport practiced by athletes and the level of competitions in which they participated. No significant differences were found in relation to gender, time of participation in competitions, and social class of athletes’ families of origin.
