Abstract

COSTA, Varley Teoldo da et al. Psychic stress analysis in soccer referees. Rev. bras. psicol. esporte [online]. 2010, vol.3, n.2, pp. 2-16. ISSN 1981-9145.

The aim was to identify the main factors that create stress in soccer referees. The method used to evaluate the officials was the TEPA, which, in this case, consisted of 102 officials of both genders in the state of Minas Gerais. Data analysis included descriptive statistics, inferential (Wilcoxon test) TEPA and internal consistency through Cronbach Alpha index. The general internal reliability of the instrument showed levels of .86. Regarding the dimensions of the instrument, the indexes were .84 (biology), .88 (psychological) and .78 (social). The results indicated that the items related to the social dimension, such as location with a lack of security, caused the highest average levels of stress. By comparing the dimensions, significant differences were found between the Psychological and Social dimensions and between the Psychological and Biological dimensions. Despite the fact the social and psychological factors were the most stressful items indicated by the referees, the interaction of the three dimensions (social, psychological and biological) shall be considered, as they influence the emergence of stress among this population.
