Abstract

NEPOMUCENO, Maristela Ferro  and  CARVALHO-FREITAS, Maria Nivalda de. The manager’s beliefs and perceptions and the work possibilities of people with disabilities. Psicol. pesq. [online]. 2008, vol.2, n.1, pp. 81-94. ISSN 1982-1247.

This research has examined if the ways managers see the possibilities of work for people with disabilities are related to the impression they have of human beings in general, that is, with their beliefs and perceptions. A survey with 227 students attending a specialization course in Administration was carried out. An “Inventory of Conceptions of Disabilities” and a “Questionnaire of Assumptions about People”, based on McGregor’s “X and Y theory” was used. Statistical analysis of descriptive data, analysis of Pearson’s correlation and qualitative analysis of open question were accomplished. It was found that there are links between how people see the possibilities of working with people with disabilities and how the managers usually assess the performance of these individuals. A predominance of stereotype answers in relation to disability were also noticed.

Keywords : People with disabilities; Opportunities for work; Beliefs; Perceptions.
