Abstract

LOPES, Carlos Eduardo. A matrix of influence as tool to analysis of E. C. Tolman’s work. Psicol. pesq. [online]. 2008, vol.2, n.2, pp. 14-22. ISSN 1982-1247.

The aim of this paper is to analyze some psychological and philosophical influences on the work of Edward Chace Tolman. We begin by describing a matrix of such influences: in a psychological perspective, the Behaviorism of J. B. Watson, and the Gestaltpsychologie of W. Köhler and K. Koffka; in a philosophical perspective, the Contextualism of S. C. Pepper, and the New Realism of R. B. Perry and E. B. Holt. From this perspective, we tried to elucidate the first part of Tolman’s work (between 1922 and the middle of the 1930’s). Although we have analyzed only this inicial period, we think this matrix of influences could be useful to understand the ulterior development of Tolman’s work

Keywords : Tolman; matrix of influence; Behaviorism.
