Abstract

MOTA, Márcia Maria Peruzzi Elia da et al. The relationship between morphological awareness and spelling in Primary Education children. Psicol. pesq. [online]. 2008, vol.2, n.2, pp. 51-60. ISSN 1982-1247.

The present study has the objective of verifying the relationship between morphological awareness and spelling acquisition of 52 children enrolled in Primary education of a federal education school in the Zona da Mata. Amongst them 25 attended a the first grade (mean age 95,9 months, s.d=3,8) and 27 second grade (mean age 106,5 months and s.d=3,9). In the current system these series would correspond to second and third year of Primary Education. The instruments used for data collection included a dictated text and two tasks for the evaluation of the morphologic awareness. The results indicated that the children of 2nd grade has not presented escores significantly better than the ones of 1st grade children in spelling measured by the ADAPE.Besides that, there were highly significant correlation between spelling and one of the morphological awareness tasks. The results were similar to those obtained by some studies, but given the existence of other controversial results it suggests that similar research that controls other linguistic abilities should be carried out in the future.

Keywords : Linguistic ability; Metalinguistic awareness; Literacy; Psychological evaluation.
