Abstract

RONZANI, Telmo Mota; PAIVA, Fernando Santana de; COTTA, Júnia Marise de Oliveira  and  BASTOS, Ronaldo Rocha. Expectations about the effects of alcohol use among teenagers. Psicol. pesq. [online]. 2009, vol.3, n.1, pp. 75-86. ISSN 1982-1247.

Epidemiological studies have shown the high consumption of alcohol among adolescents. This behavior is determined by several factors. The positive expectations related to alcohol have been identified as one of the factors that may exert important influence on the initiation and maintenance of alcohol use. Accordingly, the present study aimed to investigate the correlation between positive expectations about the effects of alcohol and patterns of consumption among adolescents. The research sample was composed of 270 adolescents, with a average age of 15.8, from three public schools, who answered a socio-demographic questionnaire, the Drug Use Screening Inventory (DUSI) and the Alcohol Expectancy Questionnaire - Adolescent Form (EAQ-A). The results indicated a positive correlation between frequency of alcohol consumption, number of doses and age with the overall positive expectations. These results may facilitate the planning of preventive strategies to combat the consumption of alcohol during adolescence.
