Abstract

ROMANELLI, Berenice Marie Ballande  and  GUIMARAES, Sandra Regina Kirchner. Orthography and linguistic skills in French- Portuguese bilingual children. Psicol. pesq. [online]. 2009, vol.3, n.1, pp. 101-114. ISSN 1982-1247.

The current research aims to analyze the writing of words in Portuguese (orthography) made by bilingual children who have French as their mother language, concentrating on the linguistic skills of these children. Participants were 11 children aged between 6 and 11 years, who learn Portuguese in a French school in Curitiba/PR. A dictation of six isolated words followed by an interview with each child to investigate his/her explanations regarding orthographic choices. Their performance in the dictation and respective explanations were classified and discussed. The results show that the children are improving the alphabetic hypothesis and replacing it by the orthographic hypothesis, and that a greater experience of the children with written Portuguese may consolidate a graphic representation of words. It is suggested that teaching leads to the grasp of consciousness of the learner regarding different aspects of the language emphasizing the development of linguistic skills in learning a foreign language
