OLIVEIRA, Daniele Cupertino de e CUPERTINO, Ana Paula. Exploring the Profile of Older Adults from the Brazilian Army. Psicol. pesq. [online]. 2011, vol.5, n.1, pp. 68-76. ISSN 1982-1247.
Brazilian army personnel usually follow a routine of frequent regular exercise and healthy lifestyle. These characteristics have been directly correlated with quality of life in later life. We mailed 600 surveys to a list of retired army personnel. 19, 3% returned the surveys. We assessed socioeconomic status, life satisfaction, self-rated health, hospitalization and fall in the previous year, sleep patterns, morbidity and other risk factors. We identified that 87,7% are married and 85% own their house. Even though they (85,1%) reported at least one morbidity, the great majority has a good sleep pattern and high satisfaction with their life. In terms lifestyle 43,8% rarely drink alcohol; only 11% are sedentary and 4,3% currently smoke. This is the first study to describe the profile older military personnel. Overall they report good health profile, high satisfaction with their life, stable social support and few risk factors.
