Abstract

FORTES, Leonardo de Sousa  and  FERREIRA, Maria Elisa Caputo. Inadequate Eating Behavior and Body Dissatisfaction in Young Athletes: Comparisons According to Sports Characteristics. Psicol. pesq. [online]. 2013, vol.7, n.2, pp. 180-187. ISSN 1982-1247.  http://dx.doi.org/10.5327/Z1982-1247201300020006.

The aim of this study was to compare the inappropriate eating behavior (IEB) and the body dissatisfaction (BD) among male athletes of team sports, with classification by weight categories and power modalities. The study included 465 athletes aged between 10 and 19 years, competitors of both team and individual sports. We used the Eating Attitudes Test and the Body Shape Questionnaire to evaluate IEB and BD, respectively. We conducted univariate covariance analysis to compare IEB and BD according to the groups of sports. The results showed that athletes of team sports showed higher frequency of IEB when compared to the other groups (p<0.05). Furthermore, athletes of sport modalities with classification by weight categories were more dissatisfied in relation to the other groups (p<0.05). We concluded that both IEB and BD were different for groups of sports.
