Cancer is a disease that causes many repercussions, such as the illness, the treatment, and hospitalization. These questions affect the physical and psychical function on the person. In this sense, the objective of this study is to comprehend how the male patients experience such repercussions. Therefore, it was conducted a qualitative, exploratory and descriptive research with 11 patients from a School Hospital in the interior of Rio Grande do Sul. The interviews were analyzed using the thematic analysis. It could be understood that, frequently, people face this illness like an interruption in their habitual life, making them unable to do professional activities, daily activities, and leisure activities. Thus, it is highlighted that the importance of the grieving process, in face of losses and changes, is fundamental so that the person can reframe his life.

Keywords : neoplasms; hospitalization; losses; activity-passivity; suffering, grief.
