Abstract

FRIGGI, Priscila Ferreira; QUINTANA, Alberto Manuel; REIS, Cristine Gabrielle Da Costa Dos  and  FARIAS, Camila Peixoto. Reconstruction of ego outlines: a psychoanalitic look on amputation. Psicol. pesq. [online]. 2018, vol.12, n.1, pp. 63-72. ISSN 1982-1247.  http://dx.doi.org/10.24879/2018001200100378.

Limbs amputation is a reconstructive procedure, however, highly invasive and can cause not only organic, but also psychic damage. It was investigated through a qualitative research and a psychoanalytic theoretical framework, how amputees individuals experience the body change. There were nine interviewed subjects who underwent amputation surgery on a public hospital in Rio Grande do Sul. It was understood that the amputation brought a traumatic character to the subjects, causing a break in the constitutive symbolic foundation of each and has a direct impact on body image and in its narcissism. Thus, it proved to be necessary a process of grief work to the amputated limb, to the body reintegration, and for the body image kept until the surgery.

Keywords : amputation; psychoanalysis; narcissism; body image; grief.
