Abstract

ARAUJO, Ludgleydson Fernandes de; CASTRO, Jefferson Luiz de Cerqueira  and  SANTOS, José Victor de Oliveira. The family and its relationship with the elderly: A study of social representations. Psicol. pesq. [online]. 2018, vol.12, n.2, pp. 14-23. ISSN 1982-1247.  http://dx.doi.org/10.24879/2018001200200130.

The present research sought to understand the social representations of the family and how the elderly person believes that the family sees him as elderly, to identify how family relationships are established and how this factor influences human development. The sample consisted of 60 elderly individuals with a mean age of 73.15 years (SD = 6.84). The Free Word Association Test and a semi-structured interview were used, which were respectively analyzed by the semantic-networking technique and the IraMuTeQ Software. It was found that care and union are objects of the social representations of the elderly, and that the family influences the dependence or not of the geronte. It is hoped that this data will subsidize interventions and studies about the relationships between family and the elderly.
