Contextos Clínic [online]. 2018, vol.11, n.2, pp. 184-196. ISSN 1983-3482.  http://dx.doi.org/10.4013/ctc.2018.112.04.

Based on the cognitive model of Beck and on the mediational role of cognition, the Adolescents Negative and Positive Automatic Thoughts Inventory (IPANPA) evaluates the frequency with which young people had thoughts about themselves, others and the future. Two interdependent studies, with different purposes and methods, were conducted. A total of 149 adolescents (12 to 16 years old; M=12.9; SD=0,9; 52.3% female) completed a semi-structured questionnaire and informed about their positive and negative thoughts. Submitted to content analysis, the questionnaire responses provided the basis for the construction, in the second study, of the 142 items of the IPANPA's preliminary version. Five judges, experts in Cognitive Therapy with adolescents, evaluated the quality and content validity of the instrument, which was also answered by 26 adolescents (13 to 18 years old; M=14.9; SD=1.3; 65.4% female) in order to obtain information about the instruction and items clarity of the language. A quantitative and qualitative analysis led to changes in the instrument, producing a version of 136 items. It can be said that the IPANPA is a promising tool for evaluating automatic thoughts, and can be useful for the evaluation of the construct in clinical and research contexts.
