DADALTO, Jessica Gaburro; CUNHA, Ana Cristina Barros da  e  MONTEIRO, Luciana Ferreira. It's not a simple conversation: perception of neonatologists on the mother-baby attachment. Contextos Clínic [online]. 2019, vol.12, n.3, pp. 881-901. ISSN 1983-3482.  http://dx.doi.org/10.4013/ctc.2019.123.09.

Based on the hypothesis that health professionals can promote the mother-baby attachment in Neonatal Intensive Care Units (NICUs), our objective was to investigate perceptions of neonatologists about their practice in order to discuss if they perceive their attending care as a resource for maternal attachment and child development. Based on a descriptive qualitative design, the study was conducted with 16 neonatologists who worked at the NICU of Maternidade Escola of UFRJ. All of them were interviewed and their verbal reports were analyzed based on the Bardin methodology of content analysis. It was observed that the supporting mother-baby attachment, as well as the transmission of information, are attributions that neonatologists recognize as their function. However, not all of them perceived the mother-baby attachment related to the future child development, focusing on its relation with the immediate evolution of the baby. We concluded that it is important to sensitize neonatologists about the repercussions of their care on the mother-infant attachment and the chid development.
