Abstract

REIS, Tomás Collodel Magalhães  and  AZEVEDO, Adriano Valério dos Santos. Experiences of homeless men in southern Brazil. Contextos Clínic [online]. 2019, vol.12, n.3, pp. 976-999. ISSN 1983-3482.  http://dx.doi.org/10.4013/ctc.2019.123.13.

The present study aimed to understand the experiences of men in street situations in the south of Brazil. Twelve men, from a supportive institution to homeless people in a town city in the south of Brazil, participated in the survey, who answered a semi-structured interview and a sociodemographic questionnaire. The thematic analysis allowed the construction of the following categories: 1. Life path and the insertion in the world of the streets, 2. Senses and meanings referring to the person in a street situation , 3. Changes in life, 4. The society's view of street people, and 5. Relations with family and friends. The life trajectory of street people is marked by the use of alcohol, drugs and family conflicts, which has repercussions on discrimination and the perception of humiliation and social exclusion. This causes changes in life related to the lack of employment, housing, and the detachment of people from family and friends. The results make it possible to construct care programs for the integral care of street people, seeking to rescue family ties and the development of life projects so that they can generate emancipation and a sense of citizenship.
