In this article, the author describes the times of the psychiatric knowledge’s constitution of concepts regarding mental weakness. It exposes the successive ways in which the perception of mental weakness, as a psychological pathology, were linked to an epistemic strategy habituated to describe mental disorders essentially in terms of deficit, as so a tendency to treat mental weakness through an association between psychiatry and pedagogy. The author finally demonstrates the incidence of psychoanalysis on the classical conception of mental weakness, by exposing the question of mental conflict.
