Abstract

JARDIM, Adriano Pereira  and  GOMES, William Barbosa. Psychotherapy and personality: the impact of the therapeutic interaction in the treatment outcome. Gerais, Rev. Interinst. Psicol. [online]. 2009, vol.2, n.1, pp. 02-11. ISSN 1983-8220.

The aim of this study was to describe the history of psychotherapy outcome research, with focus on the contributions and difficulties of the efficacy and effectiveness studies. The importance of the relationship between therapist and patient was describbed as the most important outcome factor, and the personality characteristics of both - therapist and patient - as an important element of the therapeutic relationship. Two different aproaches for the personality study in the context of the psychotherapy were analyzed: cognitive styles in the eclectic psychotherapy, and the five factor model in the existencial therapy. Both perspectives indicate that personality influence in psychotherapy is a complex object of study. Eclectism and existential psychotherapy also indicate that personality differences are responsable for differences in the relationship, affecting the outcomes.
