The objective was to identify the scientific production about domestic violence by means of the descriptors Elder Abuse and Family and to classify the articles found in national and international journals according to the thematic focus, the time, and the place of publication, research scenario, and description of the first author. The methodological approach was a bibliographic review in the databases LILACS and MEDLINE for the period from 1997 to 2009. In 2006, the biggest number of publications occurred, especially in Brazil and in the United States. The prevalence of choice among the researchers was the context of government and assistance agencies with a predominance of the qualitative approach. The object of the study followed the most varied themes: state of maltreatment and associated factors; understanding about the abuse, and perspectives of occurrence. It can be concluded that this state of victimization is complex and represents a challenge both for the investigation and for the policies regarding how to deal with family maltreatment in this population group.
