Abstract

COSTA, Mariela Cristina de Aguiar et al. Social inclusion through work: the professional qualification for people with intellectual disabilities. Gerais, Rev. Interinst. Psicol. [online]. 2011, vol.4, n.2, pp. 200-214. ISSN 1983-8220.

Researches have shown that people with intellectual disabilities are less included in organizations when compared with other types of disabilities. Since the lack of qualification from these people has been used as a reason not to hire those persons, this study investigated how the professional qualification of people with intellectual disabilities happens, at the APAEs of five cities at Campo das Vertentes, in Minas Gerais. Socio-demographic questionnaires and interviews were applied with eighteen students and one teacher from each institution. The results showed that the training workshops contribute in many aspects, from teaching a professional activity to issues related with different aspects of such people's life, like health and education. However, the qualification is configured in a web of tensions, often contradictory, which cover different views on the part of each actor involved: the Federation of APAE, institutions, families and disabled people themselves.

Keywords : Social Inclusion; Intellectual Disability; Professional Qualification; Labor Market.
