Abstract

FONSECA, Lázaro Batista da  and  LOPES, Kleber Jean Matos. Among old men and others not so elderly: self care in times of biopower. Gerais, Rev. Interinst. Psicol. [online]. 2011, vol.4, n.2, pp. 276-283. ISSN 1983-8220.

Nowadays old age has become a target for an endless number of practices supported by the medical discourse of "life quality" and "best age". In contradiction with the ascetic ways from the Past, this bioascesis establishes new values for the elderly based on hygienic rules, schemes of time occupation and ideal models of subject based on physical performance, culminating on an unbridled pursuit for better physical shape, more longevity, prolongation of youth, etc. The purpose of this text is to present evidence of how this discourse was established and how it has regulated practices geared towards the elderly. It also intends to present the ways to resist the culture of fitness within groups geared towards bioascetic practices.

Keywords : Bioascesis; Third Age; Seniority.
