Abstract

Art, handicraft, and work: a study on the limits of making and creating handicraft. Gerais, Rev. Interinst. Psicol. [online]. 2011, vol.4, n.2, pp. 284-296. ISSN 1983-8220.

This article is aimed at elucidating the aspects of cultural formation by focusing on the work of artisans within the context of the history of the city of Tiradentes, MG, and its surrounding region and by contrasting demands from the world of work with the resistance that can exist in the process of creation. Based on the authors of Critical Theory of Society, handicraft is considered in the midst of the Culture Industry, in an attempt to understand whether it still has elements of resistance concretized in the handicraft. As part of the research method we present a survey of the conditions of production and nadicraft through visits to places of production and sale of handicraft products, and analysis of documents from the Corporação de Artesãos de Tiradentes, observing group meetings and interviews. It is considered that, under market speculations of high productivity, the possibility of fulfillment by handicraft becomes impoverished by the imposition of a rate of standardization and trivializations of its products.

Keywords : Critical Theory of Society; Cultural formation; Technological rationality; Culture Industry; Resistance.
