Abstract

TEIXEIRA, Marco Antonio Pereira; CASTRO, Alexandre Kurtz dos Santos Sisson de  and  ZOLTOWSKI, Ana Paula Couto. Academic and social integration during the first weeks at the university: perceptions of university students. Gerais, Rev. Interinst. Psicol. [online]. 2012, vol.5, n.1, pp. 69-85. ISSN 1983-8220.

Social and academic integration are processes which influence the adaptation of higher education to the academic environment. The aim of this study was to describe how first-year students perceive their academic and social integration in the first weeks of university. The subjects were 17 students in their first year of university, with 18 to 28 years of age, from four undergraduate programs: civil engineering, nursing, pharmacy, and journalism. The individual interviews occurred between the fourth and eighth weeks of classes, being submitted to the thematic analysis of content. The results suggested that the processes of academic and social integration start in the beginning of the program, involving contexts of pairs, courses, professors, and institution. It is observed that the integration may be understood as a multifaceted phenomenon which is not simply the description of which persons or contexts are involved, but the manner with which the relations are perceived by the students.
