Abstract

This study investigated the career development strategies of people with disabilities, the opportunities and the barriers of their careers in companies, and how the companies have managed this issue by means of career management and development programs, conducting twenty semi-open interviews with people with disabilities who worked in companies, and an analysis of the emerging contents. The results suggested an initial difficulty of the participants in the work experience, but also their acknowledgement as workers, the possibility of developing their identities at work, and the need to face the generated conflicts, and they highlighted the importance of the existence of career development programs. In conclusion, the career opportunities for people with disabilities in companies have stimulated a more receptive working space based on the difference and on the possibility of building an identity at work, in spite of the great difficulty of being inserted into this process, which is marked by several conflicts.
