Abstract

MASIERO, André Luis. The psychopathology in Renato Ferraz Kehl works. Gerais, Rev. Interinst. Psicol. [online]. 2014, vol.7, n.2, pp. 164-178. ISSN 1983-8220.

Renato Ferraz Kehl is known for introducing eugenics into Brazil. However, he was also devoted to psychopathology, psychology, anthropology and philosophy. This paper aims to describe and analyze his psychopathology theory. Six (6) of his works were selected and analyzed and published between 1927 and 1941 focusing on t psychological and psychopathological issues. For Kehl personality and psychopathology traits would be indicators population's racial quality. He classifies personality deviations and psychological types in order to provide data for the analysis of the national character and control of what he believed to be signs of racial degeneration. The material was analyzed based on the concept of "technologies of instinct" (Michel Foucault). We concluded that the boundary line between normal and pathological is periodically changed throughout the history of science and is subject to both scientific and power seeking variables. Kehl's work is an important indicator of this process.
