The present article discusses the implantation of public policies in the municipality of São João del Rei. The coordinates which subsidized this work arose from the development of an extension project that aims to create a wide field of debates as to public policy in Mental Health and Education, using interviews with professionals from the public network of the municipality. The problem that this article deals with concerns the tension existing between the creation of federal policies of mental health and their subsequent implantation in the municipalities, considering that the effective functioning of these services depends on the administrative reality of each municipality.
