Abstract

LIMA, Mayara Gama de; ALENCAR, Heloisa Moulin de  and  ROSSETTI, Claudia Broetto. Morality: studying shame in college students. Gerais, Rev. Interinst. Psicol. [online]. 2015, vol.8, n.1, pp. 63-77. ISSN 1983-8220.

The current research paper has the main goal of investigating the influence of shame on the mental state of college students arising from a lack of ethics (self-confidence). We conducted the research with four different college students using the piagetian clinical method with semi-structured interview. The collected data sheds light on how the participants feel about shame: they did not mention much moral content in the definition, examples, and justifications given. However, we studied, among three different aspects, the judgment and/or gaze of others. We highlighted the difference made by an external observer, since all participants associate the feeling of shame with the protagonist. We hope that this data contributes to a theoretical reflection on morality, which includes the importance of affectivity for moral judgment. Based on the results found, we hope to promote other studies and discussions about the aforementioned subject.
