Abstract

VIEIRA, Marcus Rodrigues Jacobina  and  CINTRA, Elisa Maria de Ulhôa. Creative work: loss, mourning and metaphor. Gerais, Rev. Interinst. Psicol. [online]. 2016, vol.9, n.1, pp. 50-66. ISSN 1983-8220.

This paper is about the relationship between the work of mourning and the impulse to create, in agreement with the theories of Melanie Klein and Hanna Segal. The experience of loss and its related fears and pains are the basic ingredients which underlie depressive anxieties and they can be worked through in order to raise the desire to restore and recreate the loved objects, both in the inner and outer world. The desire to restore and repair lead to the ability to create and sublimate, enabling the work of successful mourning.

Keywords : creative processes; mourning; sublimation; symbolization; depressive position.
