Abstract

GRISOLIA, Felipe Salvador  and  CASTRO, Lucia Rabello de. The standardization of fast-food and its effects in the subjectivity of the young worker. Gerais, Rev. Interinst. Psicol. [online]. 2016, vol.9, n.2, pp. 211-226. ISSN 1983-8220.

The present article intends to approach the effects of the standardized work in the fast-food industry, regarding the subjective process of the young workers of these restaurants. An intervention research was performed, which included the observation of the contributors in two participating restaurants, in addition to performing semi-structured interviews with 26 workers and ex-workers. The results show that the rationalization of work leads to an extreme division of labor and to the standardization of the activities within the studied company. The majority of young interviewees understand the written procedures to be the correct form to perform the job. However, such procedures lead to discomfort in the workers, who get concerned to just reproduce the prescribed activities. In some cases, this discomfort surpasses the barriers of the work site, reaching the everyday life of the workers. The employees use alternate forms of doing their work, as well as joking with their peers in order to escape the prescribed work.
