Abstract

SANCHES, Isabela Rodrigues; PELISSOLI, Monique da Silva; LOMANDO, Eduardo Marodin  and  LEVANDOWSKI, Daniela Centenaro. The social support network of homoaffective families constituted by women. Gerais, Rev. Interinst. Psicol. [online]. 2017, vol.10, n.2, pp. 176-193. ISSN 1983-8220.

Same sex families, due to social prejudice and discrimination, can have their social support network (SSN) limited. This multiple case study with female couples investigated both the perception of their SSN and the support received. All the couples (26 to 48 years old) lived in Rio Grande do Sul/Brazil, had children and were involved in a romantic relationship from 3 to 7 years. The couples’ SSN varied in size and were family centered. There was satisfaction with the support received, although similarities and differences were found among the couples in relation to social support. The similarities among the couples were: family conflict regarding sexual orientation disclosure, difficulties in comprehension and acceptance by adolescent children, sexual orientation and family disclosure in the workplace, besides some difficulties, and positive perception of social support from friends and partner. The differences were related to social support from family of origin, school and health system. Further studies should investigate this topic in other same sex families configurations.
