Abstract

SILVA, Gabriel de Nascimento e. Recognizing stress at work: a critical appraisal. Gerais, Rev. Interinst. Psicol. [online]. 2019, vol.12, n.1, pp. 51-61. ISSN 1983-8220.  http://dx.doi.org/10.36298/gerais2019120105.

Currently the work context is marked by a general discomfort experienced by workers associated with the logic of capitalist production. The work environment has become a sickening place. In Brazil, it is observed that mental disorders and behavior are the third major cause of withdrawal from work. However, with regard to labor legislation, little attention was paid to the mental health of the worker. This contradiction favors the appearance of recurrent concepts such as occupational stress and burnout syndrome, targets of this study. Among the several theoretical perspectives that analyze the theme, a critical view is taken, in this essay, considering the phenomenon as a result of a current social, historical, economic and political process of organizations and work. From the foregoing, occupational stress is considered to be a socially produced addictive condition, and should not be reduced to a superficial approach focused on the individual and/or the organizations.

Keywords : Occupational stress; Mental health of the worker; Burnout syndrome; Capitalism.
