The performance of the psychologist in the field of Social Assistance is an important element for the discussion of this professional's performance within the social policies in Brazil. The present study aimed to understand the performance and the challenges faced by psychologists inserted in the Cras of a city of Rio Grande do Sul. This is a qualitative and exploratory research, with the participation of the five psychologists who worked in the Cras of the city and responded to a semi-structured interview. From the content analysis, it was identified that the participants described their performance as linked mainly to group activities, psychosocial care and home visits. Challenges were shown in daily work, involving professional training, high turnover of psychologists, problems of physical structure, scarcity of material and personal resources, and low investment of the public power.
