Abstract

SIMIONATTO, Katiele et al. Experiences of adolescents with cancer undergoing treatment. Gerais, Rev. Interinst. Psicol. [online]. 2022, vol.15, n.1, pp. 1-23. ISSN 1983-8220.  http://dx.doi.org/10.36298/gerais202215e17537.

This clinical-qualitative-approach work results from a study that aimed to investigate the meanings adolescents attributed to their experiences with cancer in the hospital context. The participants were adolescents from 12 to 18 years old admitted to a treatment center in a public hospital. A semi-directed interview was used as instrument of data collection. The total number of participants was nine, which was delimited based on saturation criteria. The interviews were fully transcribed and analyzed based on content analysis. The emergent categories were: 1. "Tore me apart": the diagnostic report of cancer on the adolescent's point of view. 2. "Much has changed": the rupture of daily life. 3. "They call me a baldy": the impact of other people's view. And 4. "Children inpatients": where is the adolescent's place? We highlight the importance of attention to the psychosocial needs of hospitalized adolescents.

Keywords : Adolescence; Cancer; Adolescent Psycology.
