This study aimed to show the results of a literature review about commitment at work concerning the 1996-2001 period, focusing mainly on the national production of scientific studies, and also summarizing the international state of the art. The study included periodicals from the areas of management and organizational psychology graded with mention "A" by CAPES and the annals from ENANPAD in the 1998-2001 period. Moreover, it presents an assessment of the national scientific production, supplemented by a short comparison with the latest national review, which gave place for suggestions to future researches. The main results have pointed out the vigorous growth of studies in this field, particularly the need to develop researches that integrate the multiple basis and focus of the construct and combine different methodological perspectives in order to properly understand the issue.
