Abstract

RESENDE, Sônia  and  MENDES, Ana Magnólia. The survival as strategy to deal with suffering in the bank work. Rev. Psicol., Organ. Trab. [online]. 2004, vol.4, n.1, pp. 151-175. ISSN 1984-6657.

This paper investigates the relation between pleasure-suffering experiences and individual values in the banking work. Its focus is on the representation of the value of work, in terms ofchecking if the work promotes identity and self-realization or if it means just survival, considering the lack of other options and the fear ofexclusion. The Psychodynamics of Work and the Universal Structure of Human Values theories are used. The research was undertaken with 210 bank workers of the information sector, 51.9% males, 48.1% females, 61.3% from public and 38.7% from private institutions, with ages up to 30 years (59.2%), with college degrees (75.2%), with up to 5 years of work in the institution, receiving 1 to 5 times the minimum wage (48.3%). Schwartz's Values Inventory and Pleasure-Suffering Scale were applied, both validated. Descriptive statistics, "t" test and linear regressions were used. The results suggest that pleasure and suffering are experienced in a moderate intensity. The correlation between pleasure-suffering and individual values is weak, leading to the conclusion that the suffering among these workers is not being influenced by the characteristics of individuais, but possibly - according to postulates of the Psychodynamics of Work -, by the organization of work
