Abstract

CHAVES, Antonio Marcos; SANTOS, Mariana Viana  and  MORAIS, José Henrique Miranda de. Social Representation of Organizational Change: case study in a Petrochemical Firm in Salvador (Bahia, Brazil). Rev. Psicol., Organ. Trab. [online]. 2004, vol.4, n.2, pp. 63-84. ISSN 1984-6657.

This research aims at identifying the core of the representations concerning change in a large-scale petrochemical enterprise located in Salvador (Bahia, Brazil). A sample of workers from one of the firm's sectors was presented with questionnaires. The questions addressed the changes that were perceived by workers as the most important ones to the organizational daily work, as well as how the episode of the change in process was perceived by workers. The analysis of the data, following the procedure for the identification of the central core of representations, included the simultaneous analysis of the frequency and order of evocation, thus allowing for the construction of the cognitive map. The investigation of several representations of organizational change revealed the challenges and complexities of the processes of change. The results presented a fresh perspective concerning the investigations of social representations, and contributed to the analysis of the importance of that concept to the understanding of changes in working contexts

Keywords : social representation; organizational change; cognitive map.
