Abstract

LIMA, Marcus Eugênio Oliveira et al. Social images and gender prejudice in work relations. Rev. Psicol., Organ. Trab. [online]. 2005, vol.5, n.1, pp. 71-101. ISSN 1984-6657.

In order to verify the effects of the gender and the professional status on group images in a work situation, we accomplished a study with university students. The participants should read a sketch about an interaction between a supervisor and an employee in a company, and soon afterwards to evaluate them using emotions and personality traits. The independent variables of the study were the participants' gender, the gender of the workers, and their status (supervisor vs. employee). The results indicated that the emotions and the personality traits are configured in different dimensions for supervisors and employees, the males consider that the supervision activity causes more emotional discomfort for a woman than for a man, and the male employees are perceived as possessing more self-control than female employees. These results will be discussed in terms of the statements on intergroup relations and gender prejudice theories in the work
