The article has the objective to describe a research that was carried out to identify the functions of work and organizational psychology and the applied approaches (individualist, systemic or politic) in the professional field. It begins from the sociohistorical revision about the role of such professionals. The research develops through the content analysis about the sample of practice reports in the Psychological Graduation of Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte (Brazil) in the period since 1981 to 1999, and it continues through the analysis of eight interviews with professionals in different economic branches. The content analysis of reports reveals: the systemic approach is the most adopted, the individualistic approach becomes more frequent at the beginning of decade 1990 and it returns rare at the end of the same decade when the change of practice to politic approach was beginning. The interviews reveal that the transition to politic approach is harder between the professionals. The results of research also show that the practice was more frequent in the misted ecoriomic enterprise in the decade of 1980, and that the job of the professionals is rarer in industry nowadays
