Abstract

FARIA, Graciela Sanjutá Soares  and  RACHID, Alessandra. Work and family balance: the meanings for the bank workers. Rev. Psicol., Organ. Trab. [online]. 2007, vol.7, n.1, pp. 81-105. ISSN 1984-6657.

This paper presents the new configuration of work and family, the conflicts between work and family facing bank workers and the strategies to deal with them, like the part time work. The authors collected data about bank workers, their salaries, working time and gender from the RAIS (Annual List of Social Information) data base from 1994 to 2002. The authors also interviewed bank workers from small cities in the state of São Paulo. The main findings show that the percentage of female bank workers is increasing. The bank workers have faced salary losses, sharper for part-timers and to the women, and that they have lower wages, occupy positions related to repetitive tasks, with limited perspectives. The work causes conflicts more frequently in family than the opposite, and workers have used different strategies to manage them. We also found out that part-time work provides more free time for personal/family activities, but workers think that it is acceptable only in the beginning of the career, and it must be left when a worker wants to assume positions with more responsibility and better remuneration

Keywords : labor; family; work and family balance; gender; working day.
