Unemployment has been world widely discussed due to its individual and collective impact. It is a socially constructed situation which reflects the historical and world changes, more intensely affecting the mental health of unemployed workers. Once the worker is prone to become ill in this situation, this research aimed at understanding the relationship between unemployment and mental health. For this purpose, 204 unemployed and registered people in an employment agency in Distrito Federal answered the following research instruments: Social-Demographic Survey, Instrument to Measure Psycho-social Suffering of Unemployed Workers, developed by Veiga and Silva (2007); and General Health Questionnaire (Pasquali and cols.,1996). Basic descriptive analysis such as Pearson correlation and analysis of variance were performed using the statistic package SPSS. The results were significant, once the data obtained showed positive correlations between psycho-social suffering and the general health state
