Abstract

GUILLAND, Romilda  and  MONTEIRO, Janine Kieling. Youth and unemployment: the state of the art. Rev. Psicol., Organ. Trab. [online]. 2010, vol.10, n.2, pp. 145-158. ISSN 1984-6657.

Youth unemployment is a reason for concern in many countries. Lack of a job can restrict young people's dreams of fulfillment as individuals, and makes them stop seeing a job as something that might positively direct their lives. This paper aims at advancing a theoretical discussion based on a review of Brazilian and international literature in order to discuss how youth unemployment has been treated during the past 5 years (2004 through 2008). A study was performed using the Medline, Adolec, Lilacs, and Scielo online databases, which found 21 papers, of which 33% are Brazilian; only 11 studies treat the issue of 'youth unemployment' per se. These papers indicate that youth unemployment is caused by a multitude of factors, and that there are differences in the unemployment situation according to the social context in which the youngsters are located. Analysis of these papers pointed to the fact that 62% of the studies focus mainly on the mental health consequences of unemployment for young people. Only one paper consists of qualitative research. This result points to the fact that there is a shortage of research seeking to understand the dynamics of the subjectification processes of unemployed youngsters

Keywords : unemployment; youngsters; mental health.
