Abstract

CAMPOS, Maria Isabel de  and  RUEDA, Fabián Javier Marín. Evolution of authentic leadership construct: a literature review. Rev. Psicol., Organ. Trab. [online]. 2018, vol.18, n.1, pp. 291-298. ISSN 1984-6657.  http://dx.doi.org/10.17652/rpot/2018.1.13473.

Authentic Leadership (AL) has attracted the attention of academics and organizational practitioners since the beginning of this century. The objective of this study was to review the literature published between 2011 and 2016, in order to evaluate the evolutionary stage of the AL construct. We analyzed 106 articles written by scholars from all continents, with nine being theoretical and 97 empirical. The results indicate that the construct evolved due to, among other factors, the empirical corroboration of theoretical assumptions. However, the existence of possible redundancy between AL and transformational leadership still remains in question. Further research is suggested regarding how authentic leaders develop their followers, in contrast to what is done by other leadership styles, and also on new forms of measurement, aiming to answer open questions.

Keywords : leader; authenticity; organizational psychology.
