Abstract

COELHO, Jorge Artur Peçanha de Miranda et al. Stress as a predictor of Burnout in the Banking sector. Rev. Psicol., Organ. Trab. [online]. 2018, vol.18, n.1, pp. 306-315. ISSN 1984-6657.  http://dx.doi.org/10.17652/rpot/2018.1.13162.

This cross-sectional study aimed to evaluate job stress and its association with burnout syndrome. The participants were 217 banking employees, ranging in age from 19 to 59 years (mean = 38.4; SD = 10.4), 55.8% women, from public and private agencies in 38 cities in 14 Brazilian states. Participants answered the following instruments using an electronic questionnaire: (1) Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI); (2) Job Stress Scale (JSS); (3) Sociodemographic Questionnaire. To meet our objectives, we used descriptive statistics (e.g., mean, standard deviation), chi-square test, Pearson's r correlation, and Multiple Linear Regression. The results show that the constructs evaluated should be studied carefully and continuously, given that medium and high levels of exposure to occupational stress are associated with burnout, and indicate specific factors of the banking sector that can become responsible for mental disorders among workers.
