FLORES, Veronica Dalla Costa  e  MOURA, Eliana Perez Gonçalves de. Meanings of work, pleasure and suffering in the tasks of funeral agents. Rev. Psicol., Organ. Trab. [online]. 2018, vol.18, n.1, pp. 326-334. ISSN 1984-6657.  http://dx.doi.org/10.17652/rpot/2018.1.13337.

This study was aimed at funeral workers, seeking to understand the experiences of pleasure, suffering, and meanings of this work. Ten workers from three funeral homes in the metropolitan region of Porto Alegre, RS participated. The research, qualitative exploratory, and descriptive in character, was based on the Psychodynamics of Work. Data collection was carried out via individual interviews, containing ten semi-structured questions and sociodemographic data. The interviews were recorded, transcribed, and analyzed using the Content Analysis technique (Bardin, 1977), aiming at the categories: work meanings, experiences of pleasure and suffering, work organization, defensive strategies, and social status of the profession. It was found that funeral agents attribute meanings to their work, even in the face of experiences of suffering and prejudice, which is possible through defensive strategies and flexible work organization. This process enables them to stay engaged and feel recognized, an important factor for mental health.
