Abstract

VIANA, Priscila de Jesus  and  MOURAO, Luciana. Task and knowledge characteristics as professional development predictors. Rev. Psicol., Organ. Trab. [online]. 2019, vol.19, n.4, pp. 800-808. ISSN 1984-6657.  http://dx.doi.org/10.17652/rpot/2019.4.17475.

Work design is a construct with wide influence on several organizational variables. The objective of this study was to investigate the association between the variables work design (task characteristics and knowledge characteristics) and perception of professional development. The sample comprised 389 workers (71% women) from different occupational categories. The data collection instrument contained two scales already used in Brazilian samples and with good psychometric indicators. Data analysis was carried out using structural equation modeling. The results confirmed a positive relationship between the task characteristics dimension and the perception of professional development, and a negative relationship between such perception of development and the knowledge characteristics dimension. The results obtained are discussed in light of the literature reviewed and practical implications are presented for career counseling and personnel management.
