This article aims to present and discuss the perceptions of health’s professionals on psychiatric patients and their hospitalization. These are professionals who work in the field of psychiatric care at a public hospital located in southern Brazil. It seeks to discuss how perceptions of professionals in mental health interfere with the care and treatment of patients with a psychiatric disorder. The methodology adopted is participant observation, using the field diary and the semi-structured interview as working tools. The participant observation was carried out for three months and the interviews were conducted with five health’s professionals working in the studied site. Between the found perceptions about mental health, they all refer to the idea of aggression, unpredictability, lack of control and an intense psychological distress experienced by the patient, which interfere with their global functioning and their family and social relationships.
