Abstract

MANTELLATTO, Laura Meira Bonfim. Living Alone experiences in postmodernity: young undergraduate students points of view. Rev. Psicol. UNESP [online]. 2016, vol.15, n.1, pp. 70-81. ISSN 1984-9044.

This study aimed to discuss the hypothesis, especially in Lasch (1979) and Sennett (1988), about interpersonal relationships in the contemporary, with the background of the individualization process, which we have chosen as an exponent the growing number of people living alone in Brazil (IBGE, 2011). Bibliographic data were confronted with the contents of semi-structured interviews with 05 undergraduate students who lives alone. Despite being a lifestyle engendered by the demands of the current economic system, we found that such experience is re-signified by the subjects, who attribute meanings of freedom and development of such experience. Also, loneliness is a sensitivity to the absence of the Other and opening possibilities for meeting Others.

Keywords : individualization; contemporaneity; young adults; living alone.
