Abstract

PANCIERA, Sara Del Prete  and  PREZOTTO, Eduardo dos Santos. Social understanding and language: experimental tasks and use of mental terms in play situation. Rev. Psicol. UNESP [online]. 2017, vol.16, n.1, pp. 27-40. ISSN 1984-9044.

The primary aim of this study was to investigate the development of social understanding showed by preschool children in two different situations: their use of mental terms in a playful and social situation and their performance on theory of mind tasks. Fifteen children between 2;6 and 5;2 years-old, who attended a school located in the peripheral zone of the city participated in the study. For the evaluation of the linguistic production in a play situation, children were divided into small groups and invited to participate in the reenactment of a story. They also responded to the theory-of-mind scale. Differently from previous studies carried out with children of the same age group but of medium and high socioeconomic level, only two children used mental terms in their linguistic manifestations. These participants are among those who scored higher on the theory of mind task scale. These results were analyzed taking into account the conversational experiences of the child within the family and school.
